Similar media texts that influence our work

Beyonce- Broken Hearted Girl

This music video revolves around a relationship where the artist and the male character break up. She takes it very hard and even though the break up is leaving her sad, she wants to forget that she ever loved him because she doesn't want to be a ‘broken hearted girl’. This video contains similar emotions that we hope to portray in our own music video and therefore we were influenced by this. We gathered various ideas from the camera shots within this video, including the silhouette of the artist, reversing (rewinding) and a close up shot of the happy couple.

Adele- Someone Like You

The narrative of this music video is about a woman who has lost her love and cannot get him back. She blames herself for loosing him so she wishes she can find another man just like her previous love. The ideas that we acquired from this music video is the opening sequence, where the establishing shot fades in and then tracks the artist as she walks, looking depressed. We believe that this is a good opening sequence because it immediately makes the audience aware that the artist is upset and lonely. We also like the idea of having the video in black and white as it goes well with the sad storyline and puts a dampening effect on the video. The idea of using a fading transition persuades us to use this in our own music video as it represents the artist looking back in time, which will go well with our storyline where the artist reminisces the past.

Adele- To Make You Feel My Love

This music video is about a female who wants the man she loves to love her in return, but he clearly doesn’t. The things we both liked about this music video was the close up shot of her bedside clock showing the time of 4:00am. This is because it tells the audience that she’s been up all night thinking about this certain man and that he has a huge influence on her life. We also thought that the use of the mobile phone was the central object of the music video as it resembled the man showing no love back when she did not receive a text. We therefore may use this in our own video in order to make the narrative very clear to our audience.

Katy Perry- Thinking Of You

The narrative of this music video is about a female who has lost her partner in the war, and even though she is with someone else now, she can’t stop thinking about him. The music video is about her looking back in time at the memories they shared together. This is an idea we would like to apply to our own music video, where even though the male isn’t dead, she looks back at the times they shared together. One aspect of this video we both liked was when she was in the frame, whilst she was looking at herself and the male character in the past. This shows the audience that the artist is reminiscing over the past. We were also emotionally influenced by the sequence of both characters laying on a picnic blanket and them both riding the same bike as it shows a strong connection between both of the characters.
